Got a Private Plate for Christmas? Here is How to Assign It
If you were one of the lucky thousands of UK drivers who unwrapped a “Retention Certificate” this Christmas, congratulations! A private registration is the ultimate personal upgrade for your car.
But as you probably noticed, you can’t screw a piece of paper to your bumper.
Many recipients are left scratching their heads in January, holding a V750 certificate and asking: “What do I do now?”
Don’t worry. The process is easier than you think. Here is your step-by-step guide to getting that new registration assigned to your vehicle and legally on the road.
Step 1: Check Your Paperwork (V750 vs. V778).
First, review the document you received. It will be one of two types:
- V750 (Pink Form): This is a “Certificate of Entitlement.” It means you are the first person to own this brand-new registration (usually bought directly from the DVLA).
- V778 (Green Form): This is a “Retention Document.” It means the plate has been used on a car before and is currently being held off the road.
Good news: The assignment process is exactly the same for both!
Step 2: Assign It Online (The Fast Way)
Gone are the days of posting forms and waiting weeks. You can now assign your number plate instantly online between 7 am and 7 pm.
- Go to the Gov.uk “Assign a private number” page.
- Enter your Certificate Number (from the V750/V778).
- Enter your Vehicle Registration (your car’s current number plate).
- Enter the V5C Document Reference Number (the 11-digit number from your car’s logbook).
I Just Bought the Car and Don’t Have a V5C Yet!” If you also got a new car for Christmas and are waiting for the logbook, don’t panic. You can use the Green “New Keeper” Slip (V5C/2) to complete the transfer by post, though you may need to wait for the full logbook to do it online.
Step 3: The Most Important Rule (Don’t Drive Yet!)
Once you click “Confirm” online, the assignment is usually instant. However, you must not drive the vehicle yet.
You must wait until you receive the DVLA confirmation email. Once that email lands in your inbox, your car is officially registered under the new number.
- Warning: If you drive on your old plates after this moment, you are technically driving an unregistered vehicle.
- Solution: Have your new physical plates ready to fit before you click the button!
Step 4: Get Your Physical Plates Made.
This is the part many people forget. The DVLA grants you ownership of the number, but they do not send you the actual acrylic number plates. You have to buy those yourself.
Don’t settle for standard, boring plates to go with your new private reg. Make it stand out with a premium style:
- 4D Laser Cut Plates: Sharp, raised acrylic letters that give a modern, “factory” look.
- 3D Gel Plates: A glossy, domed finish that looks incredible on luxury cars.
Note: We are a DVLA-Registered Supplier. This means our plates are 100% road-legal and come with the correct BSAU 145e markings required for your MOT.
Step 5: Tell Your Insurance Company
Before you head out for a celebratory drive, ring your insurer. Tell them you have changed your registration number.
- Most insurers update this for free, though some may charge a small admin fee.
- Crucial: If you don’t tell them, your policy may be invalid in the event of an accident.
