Efforts In WWII
Throughout WWII, the U.S. Army was on the lookout for vehicles specifically designed to suit their needs and purposes. After sifting through proposals from 135 different manufacturers, they were only able to settle on three: American Bantam Car Company, Ford and Willys-Overland. Out of these three pioneering companies camethe prototype of what would become known all over the world as the “jeep” – driven by their four-wheel drive system. On Armistice Day (now known as Veteran’s Day), November 1940, Willys-Overland proudly presented “Quad” to the U.S. Army, further increasing its success rate in accomplishing its mission.
It wasn’t until 1945 when Willys CJ-2A began to be referred to as “Jeep”. During the war, these vehicles proved to be invaluable and were used for many purposes, including cable lying, firefighting pumpers, ambulances, tractors and more. They turned out to be one of the US’s most effective non-ammunition weapons and were even shipped overseas and provided not just Great Britain with these lifesaving transportations, but also the Soviet Red Army. It’s reported that around 30% of all production was sent off for use by other armies during this time.
Models
Many people know Jeep for its market-leading capability and adventure-seeking spirit. Behind the iconic Wrangler, however, is a unique history of innovative models created in response to Jeep’s diverse customer base. The company started from humble beginnings with the series CJ’s, designated Civilian Jeeps which were introduced in 1945 to bring commercial success to the brand. Soon after, they released the remarkable CJ-V35/U which included a snorkel device that allowed it to be submerged short term. Allowing Jeep enthusiasts more adventure than ever before! After that came along its most beloved model – the Wrangler – released in 1986 before being replaced by 3 updated generations over time.
It’s definitely true that in recent years, Jeep has been making big strides to transition from purely off-road vehicles to more luxury on-road models. They’ve done an impressive job at maintaining the iconic features that they are known for while introducing more modern touches like comfort and safety into their newer cars. Take the Cherokee, Renegade, and Wagoneer for example–through clever design tactics, they preserved the round headlights and 7-bar grill while adding elements that allowed these vehicles to fit into modern contexts. All in all it definitely looks like Jeep is here to stay!
